In Geometry we were learning about tessellation. Here are our tessellating patterns we made using wall tiles. We look forward to sharing more of our work after the holidays (in 2 weeks).
Haere mai, welcome to our blog. We are a year 5 & 6 class in Auckland, New Zealand. Our teacher is Mrs Richardson.

Tessellation
In maths we continued with our geometry work, which was tessellation using tiles.
Mrs Manickum said to Room 5, “We are going to use the tiles that Tevita’s dad gave to us for making tessellating patterns.”

We all worked on our own using the big and small square tiles. Kryzjon came up with the idea of using the bigger tiles for his pattern but he changed his mind and used the small tiles. I made a pattern that looked just like the floor in my nana’s bathroom.
The rules of a tessellating pattern are;
There must be no gaps, no overlapping (one on top of each other) there must be a vertex (corners must meet). When I completed my tessellating pattern, Kryzjon told me it was so cool then I replied back to him “Wow your one is so amazing,” Kryzjon said “Thank you Carlos.”

SPORTS MAYHEM
“Look at them running at high speed!” I can imagine a collision or worse full on mayhem!!!
On a sunny Friday, after morning tea I thought it was going to be a typical day but then I remembered there was futsal. I felt irritated because I might not do well. But after arriving at the bottom court, I couldn’t wait to play against another team. The first match was Futsal Masters versus Burnout. In the back of my mind I was asking “Who’s going to win?” Kryzjon was the goalie, he was the last line of defence and I was the second last line of defence.
When the ball moved I knew the game had started. The match was fierce and unpredictable. The score was 2 – 1 to Futsal Masters (my team). After the session I was overwhelmed and exhausted from all that running.

DON'T Hit My Face!
“Ha…. No! Don’t…. hit….. my….. face!”
On a hot, sunny day Room 5 went to play another active game of futsal. I was up and going like the hare in The Hare and the Tortoise. We (all the girls) rushed to the top court to start our game of futsal.
Juliano ( our Brazilian coach) said, “Futsal Queens and Futsal Champs start off first.” As we played both teams kept kicking the ball out of the court and they got no goals. Then it was Lace Ups versus Futsal Queens. Both teams were short of players. So Lace Ups chose me and Futsal Queens chose Frankie. Frankie and I were goalie for our teams. And that was when it started. Futsal Queens came right up and were kicking the ball at ME! Ooooooh dear, I thought they were going to get a goal but then ...... ha…Ha…HAA like the speed of lightning I saved the ball! Because I realized that the Futsal Queens were going for my beautiful face and so I put my palms out in front and saved the ball from hitting my face just before the whistle.
Never in my life had I experienced that. I had a fantastic time playing another game of futsal and I can’t wait to play next time.

FUTSAL COACHING
Did you ever play a game that uses a ball and whenever it goes over the line the game stops instantly?
Room 5 had a special opportunity to play Futsal. It’s a little bit like indoor soccer.
Every Friday after morning tea Room 5 (my class) goes out and plays futsal on the bottom court. But on Friday 2nd September we had futsal inside the hall because the court was wet and slippery and it was raining. We got into our groups. There were two groups of boys and two groups of girls. My groups was called the Futsal Queens. There were four players, Angelina, Soana, Joanna and I. When we arrived at the hall we saw Juliano with Room 7 and they were playing a game. Then it was our turn to use the hall. The Futsal Queens had green bibs. They played against the yellow bibs. When the game started Joanna kept kicking the ball out. Everyone was blocking me. Then I almost scored a goal but I slipped on the ball “ouch”. At the end of the game the score was zero for both teams. But it’s not about winning, it’s about having fun. I had lots of fun, I enjoyed playing Futsal very much.

WIN! WIN! FUTSAL QUEENS
It was a sunny, hot and exciting day when Room 5 and 6 did something FUN.
On Friday 9 September we played futsal. I like playing futsal, it is my favourite new sport. First we had to get into our groups. Then we counted how many mininos (Portuguese for boys) and how many minanas Portuguese for(girls) there were. Room 5 played against Room 6. I thought our game was easy but guess what? It was hard because of one player in the Futsal Champs team, Agnes. She was really hard to get through. But then guess what happened? Tricia got a goal for us! Then she got another goal. When the time was up my team were glad because we had to play against the Lace Ups team from Room 6. I was freaked out because they looked really good. Juliano blew the whistle so the game could start. My palms were sweaty. I heard the whistle, it was really loud so I blocked my ears. Then everyone started to run. B e e E E P the whistle blew because I touched the ball. If you touch the ball with your hand the other team gets the ball. It was embarrassing because everyone was looking at me.
Finally the game was over and I was very happy because I was exhausted!
