I think gum should not be allowed in school because…..
First of all it makes the school grounds yucky and messy.
Secondly, children don’t concentrate on their work when they chew gum.
Lastly, children will play with gum and get germs then they’ll be sick.
So please, please teachers don’t change the rules to negative rules, so children can bring gum to school.
Haere mai, welcome to our blog. We are a year 5 & 6 class in Auckland, New Zealand. Our teacher is Mrs Richardson.

SNORKLING
Can you still remember the last time you had fun in the water with big goggles on?
Well on 14 June some of my classmates and I went snorkling. It was cool because we left class before the lunch bell rang. When we put on our togs and went into the pool I had goosebumps because I was excited and happy. The first thing we did was put our snorkle and mask into the water so it didn't fog up. Then Chris told us to put on our snorkle and mask. When I put mine on I felt like another person tryng something new. After that Chris told us to go under and let the water go into our snorkles then get up and blow out the water. At first I found it hard but I practised and practised and I got it! When we finished all of the easy things Chris thought it was time for the hard stuff. So that hard stuff was to dive under the water and get frizbees that Chris threw into the water. It was hard because we had to get them before anyone else. I was sad when it was time to come out. I felt grateful and thankful that I am at this school. I'm looking forward to the next time we're going to do snorkling.

Taking Pictures
Have you ever wanted to do something fun?
Well on 16 June Room 5 went to the pool. I was not swimming because I felt a little bit sick so instead I took pictures of the class with a digital water-proof camera. The first picture that I took was of the jellyfish group. Guess what? There was a lifeguard teaching the Great Whites group. His name was Sean and he got all wet because there was too much splashing! Chris told me to go up the stairs and take photos from the platform so they could be clearer. I gave the camera to Sophie to take pictures under the water. She took a picture of people's legs. When everyone started to come out of the pool I took pictures of them. I got enjoyment from taking the pictures but I felt sad because I didn't swim. Next week I will swim.

Learning From A Lifeguard
How do you feel when someone comes and shows you more about being safe in water?
Well Room 5 is lucky because a lifeguard came to show us how to dive under waves. It was very tricky when Sean the lifeguard said " Swim on top of the waves." Someone else was there, it was Chris. He watched us a for a bit. Sean was telling us to practice going under the waves when some of my classmates were making waves with the little floating boards. We were all having turns. That was the second last session we had with Sean. I felt really proud because we were learning more about being SAFE in the water.

THE BIG WAVES
I felt like a secret agent who had to breathe under water for a l o o o o o n g time!
"OK let's get into two separate lines, and do it quietly. READY, SET, GO!" called Sean.
I had to go on a boogie board, but I first had to put the leash around my wrist. Then back and forth everyone had a turn on the boogie boards. After that Sean told Joann, Carlos, Frankie and me to get small floating boards. We had to push the floating boards backward and forward like a machine in order to make waves. Agnes and the rest of the class had to swim to the end of the pool with waves heading their way. Next we went under the waves like a submarine at night time. After that we had to say good-bye to Sean and Chris. Having to learn about how to swim and about being safe in the water is cool and FUN!

Don't Fight The Waves!
Ever imagined that you were trapped in a situation with a BIG wave? Well a lifeguard named Sean was teaching us how to swim under the wave not through it. I was not in the pool because I was sick so had to stay out, but I saw my classmates doing a warm up. They had to have races with the boogie board. I heard them screaming and shouting "YEAH!" After the warm up, Sean chose four people to hold small boards to make big waves to show it is harder to swim through them than going under. I could see everyone swimming through the waves as fast as they could. After that it was time to swim under the waves. Sean said, "It is very wavy on top of the water but very still underneath." I could see Room 5 dolphin diving under the waves, popping up on the other side of the pool. I was happy to see Room 5 having fun, but sad also because I was not in the pool.

Be Safe In The Water
Have you ever swam under and over very strong waves? Well we did. Room 5 on 15th June were introduced to a lifeguard. His name was Sean. First of all we talked about what beaches we'd been to. Then we were put into two groups for relays. We had to use boogyboards. After that we started to talk about if we could swim through big waves. Sean picked four people to make the big waves in the pool. It was cool! We had to swim through the waves, then we had to swim under them. That was cool too, and a bit tricky. When our time was up with Sean I was thankful that he came because he helped us to be safe in the water.
